Autonomous store or vending machine: which do you need?

By Sergi Moure, CEO of Techtail · Updated:

The main difference is how the customer buys. At a vending machine, they choose a product on a keypad and the machine dispenses it. In an autonomous store, they walk in, take what they want from the shelves, as in any shop, and payment happens automatically on the way out. That's why an autonomous store can offer a wider range, fresh products and multi-item purchases, while vending is a better fit when a few impulse products are enough.

    When to choose each

Vending makes sense if drinks and snacks are enough, the available space is minimal and the average ticket is low.

An autonomous store makes sense if you want to offer a complete shop (breakfast, lunch, essentials, fresh products), if there is footfall during hours when there are currently no staff (petrol stations at night, hotels, campsites, campuses, coworkings, stadiums) or if you want data on what sells and when to restock.

If the space is very small, the Cabinet is Techtail's compact format: it brings the same autonomous-store technology in a single unit.

    And in industry?

Industrial vending machines for PPE and consumables have the same limit: one item per transaction and items of regular shape. Techtail's Smart Stock applies autonomous-store technology to the warehouse: the operator identifies themselves, takes what they need without scanning anything, and each withdrawal is assigned to their project and sent to the ERP (SAP, Sage and more).

    Frequently asked questions

Is an autonomous store more expensive than a vending machine?

    +

Yes, the initial investment is higher: a Techtail autonomous store ranges from €25,000 to €120,000 plus a monthly subscription. In return, it allows a wider range and multi-item purchases.

Do products need to be scanned?

    +

No. AI cameras and weight sensors detect what the customer takes.

    Can I sell chilled products?

    +

Yes, with sensor-equipped fridges built into the store.

Can it coexist with my current shop?

    +

Yes. The Corner Store integrates into an existing business.
